Malé, Maldives, September 10, 2024 – The CAVA Women’s Volleyball Challenge Cup has reached its thrilling climax, with Kyrgyzstan and host nation Maldives securing their spots in the final. The semifinals, held Tuesday in Malé, saw intense battles that determined the finalists for Wednesday’s much-anticipated championship match.
In the first semifinal, Kyrgyzstan, the top-ranked team, faced fourth place Afghanistan. Despite Afghanistan’s valiant efforts, they were unable to break their losing streak, falling to Kyrgyzstan in straight sets 21-25, 22-25, 19-25.
This dominant performance propelled Kyrgyzstan to the final match, where they will compete for the gold medal.
Kyrgyzstan’s Aiturgan Aitbekova and Afghanistan’s Roghayeh Mohammadi were joint top scorers of the match, each contributing 17 points in a hard-fought contest.
The second semifinal encounter saw hosts Maldives, ranked second, face off against Tajikistan, the third place. Backed by an enthusiastic crowd of 4,000 home fans, the Maldives triumphed with a 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-12, 25-17) victory, securing their place in the final. Tajikistan briefly leveled the match after winning the second set, but a series of errors allowed the Maldives to regain control and finish the match in dominant fashion.
Hawwa Rashida shone for the Maldives, scoring 17 points, all in attack, while Zamira Badalbekova led the scoring for Tajikistan with 10 points from 7 kills and 3 aces.
The final showdown between Kyrgyzstan and Maldives will take place on Wednesday, September 11. In the bronze medal match, Afghanistan and Tajikistan will battle for third place, bringing the exciting tournament to a close.
