Kyrgyzstan2 attack Mongolia
Hosts Kyrgyzstan enjoyed mixed fortunes on Day 3 of the 2023 Central Asian Volleyball Association (CAVA) Men’s Volleyball Nation’s League at the Sports and Recreation Complex Gazprom in Cholpon-Ata on Tuesday, with Kyrgyzstan overcoming Turkmenistan in hard-fought four sets and Kyrgyzstan2 going down to Mongolia.
Kyrgyzstan, which captured the last year’s 3rd AVC Men’s Challenger Cup on home soil, made it three wins on the trot on Tuesday. They brushed off Uzbekistan in straight sets on the opening day on June 18 before powering past Nepal 3-1 and Turkmenistan with the similar margin 3-1 on Monday and Tuesday respectively to stay atop the standing with 9 points from straight three wins.
Against Turkmenistan, still looking for their first win in the single round-robin tournament, the host side struggled in the first set when Turkmenistan opened up with aggression and massive challenge. Gulyyev Mithun’s powerful fast attacks and Atayev Rahat’s solid blocks became major forces to be reckoned with of Turkmenistan. However, with Junusov Omurbek and Toktoeve Nurmukhammed on fire, Kyrgyzstan fought back hard to eventually win the closely-contested set 28-26.
Conceding one set, Turkmenistan recovered to win back the second set 25-22 to level it at 1-1 and tried to maintain their form. Still, Kyrgyzstan held their nerves and bounced back mightily to claim back-to-back sets for the eventual 3-1 win.
