MONOLITH SKY RISERS SWEEP KWAI TSING IN 5th-8th SEMIFINALS

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, September 27, 2024 – The Philippines’ Monolith Sky Risers defeated Hong Kong, China’s Kwai Tsing 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-22) in  the 5th-8th semifinals of the 2024 Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship at the  Chartchai Hall. 

Captain Mhicaela Belen (16 points) and Alyssa Jae Solomon (15 points) emerged as the best scorers in the match, posting double-digit figures on Friday afternoon. 

Solomon talked about their experience as a team in the annual meet for Asia’s best and most promising clubs.

“Each day is really a learning experience for us, and what we learn in training, for example, yesterday, we must apply those in today’s game. 

“I think we learned a lot in this competition, like defense. We’ve really come a long way in that aspect,” she said. 

The Philippines’ club team established a good rhythm at the start of the match. They set their plays on their best hitters Solomon and Belen. The team also had the benefit of a hardworking passing unit, that they could effectively maintain a stable lead. 

Arah Ella Panique and Minierva Maaya were brought in for the second set, and played quality minutes. Panique as fearless from the left flank, while Maaya converted in key attacks running the quick middle plays. 

Later, Kwai Tsing equalled as they delivered in some crucial stuff blocks, converting from a total of 4 deflections in the second set. They tried to fight along with each sideout, with  captain Yu Ying Chi shining through in hero moments. They were nearing the completion of a comeback failed to close out due to a misfired attack. 

The Philippines club dominated in the third set, which allowed head coach Sherwin Meneses to switch to his bench players. The substitutes delivered well during their stint on the floor, but later suffered from lapses which narrowed the gap. Solomon was called back in to deliver the match point of the straight-sets victory. 

On Saturday, September 28, Monolith Sky Risers will face Vietnam’s Duc Giang Chemical at 16:00 Thailand time to contend the fifth place. Kwai Tsing will play against Iran’s Saipa Club for the 7th-8th finale in the earlier match set at 13:00 Thailand time.
