Cook is an Olympic beach volleyball champion having won gold at Sydney 2000
Queensland Premier and Minister for the Olympics, Annastacia Palaszczuk, on Tuesday announced that Australia’s Natalie Cook, a beach volleyball legend and Olympic champion, will join the 22-member Board of the Organising Committee for the Olympic Games Brisbane 2032.
Natalie Cook was the first Australian woman to compete at five Olympic Games, and she also won Olympic gold on home soil at Sydney 2000. Her incredible achievements in the sport also include an Olympic bronze medal at Atlanta 1996 and bronze at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships 2003.
Cook joins track and field athlete Patrick Johnson on being nominated for the Board. Johnson holds Australia’s 100 metres record at 9.93 seconds, and will sit alongside the Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Deputy Premier Steven Miles on the committee.
Talking about the announcement in her blog, https://www.nataliecook.com/blog/on-board-2032 Natalie Cook said:
“From being part of the team who submitted the winning bid, to now being appointed to the board – I really can’t describe in words how special it is to me. I am so excited to be a part of the team that is now tasked to set up Brisbane, Queensland and Australia for success on the world stage.
“Part of my mission for these Games is to continue to put the athletes at the centre of everything we do: from building solid pathways from grassroots to elite levels of competition, to ensuring every athlete who attends the Games can feel a sense of connection and solidarity across the ‘satellite’ athlete villages on the Sunshine and Gold Coasts, as well as Brisbane.”
