Malé, Maldives, September 17, 2024 – Nepal Police Club became the only unbeaten team on Day 3 of the action-packed preliminaries of the 2024 CAVA Women’s Club Volleyball Championship, as both Maldivian teams, Club Wamco and Maldives Police Club, succumbed to defeats to their respective opponents on Tuesday.
In the first match of the day, Nepal Police Club delivered a commanding performance against VC Diamed of Tajikistan to secure a sensational 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-14) victory.
Despite facing a Nepalese squad with several bench players, VC Diamed still failed to make their mark and their performance was unstable throughout.
VC Diamed’s head coach Roxshana Taygunshoeva attributed her team’s struggle to fatigue and limited player availability, stating, “My players are very tired. I do not have much availabilities. We have remained only ten players from the recent CAVA Women’s Challenge Cup in Maldives, while all other teams have refreshed their rosters. My only expectation is for them to fight for every ball, even if they lose it.”
Kamana Bista led Nepal Police Club with 13 points including 9 attacks from 19 attempts and 3 blocks, while Zamira Badalbekova contributed 11 points on the VC Diamed’s loss.
The day’s highlight match saw Club Wamco of the Maldives take on Humo VC from Uzbekistan in a thrilling contest full of twists and turns.
After winning the first set 25-19, Club Wamco appeared to be in control, much to the delight of the home crowd and the distinguished guests in attendance including Jamshid Shukrulloevich Fayziev, Vice President of Uzbekistan Volleyball Association, and Mr Mohamed Latheef, President of CAVA (Central Asian Volleyball Association) and VAM (Volleyball Association of Maldives), himself AVC Executive Vice President and AVC Zonal Executive Vice President representing Central Zone.
However, Humo VC put their acts together and staged a strong comeback to win three sets in a row for the dramatic 3-1 (19-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-18) victory.
Olimova Malikabonu delivered 15 points from 14 attempts and one ace for Humo VC, while Kuttika Kaewpin, a standout Thai player for Club Wamco, posted a match-high 27 points from 23 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces. However, her efforts did not pay off as Club Wamco still went down to the strong opponents.
In the final match of the day, Maldives Police Club faced a daunting challenge from reigning champions Sri Lanka Air Force. The Maldives team played well up to their level, but were still outplayed in straight sets 12-25, 15-25, 19-25, capping off a difficult day for the host nation.
Prasadani Jayamaha H.D. chipped in 14 points including 13 attacks from 30 attempts for Sri Lanka Air Force, while Rasulbek Kyzy Roza led Maldives Police Club with 6 points.
At the end of the first three days of the preliminaries, Nepal Police Club stayed atop the six-team standing with 9 points from three straight wins and without dropping a single set to their respective rivals. Humo VC of Uzbekistan came in second place with 6 points from 2 wins against one loss, with Maldives’ Club Wamco in close third position. The Maldivian team similarly bagged 6 points from 2 wins against one loss, but due to win/loss set ratio, had to be content with the third position.
Sri Lanka Air Force are trailing in fourth place with 3 points from one win against two losses, while Maldives Police Club also had the similar performance with 3 points from one win against two losses, but were second to Sri Lanka Air Force in the win/loss set ratio and as a result, came in fifth position. Tajikistan’s VC Diamed have yet won a single set in their previous three matches to finish on the bottom sixth.
All participating teams will take a break on Wednesday, September 18. The round-robin preliminaries resume on Thursday and Friday, with teams culminating their campaigns in the ranking matches on Saturday, September 21, which will be followed by awards presentation and closing ceremony.
