Club Wamco’s Kittika Kaewpin attacks Nepal Police Club

Male, Maldives, September 19, 2024 – On exciting Day 4 of round-robin preliminaries in the 2024 CAVA Women’s Club Volleyball Championship, in-form Nepal Police Club continued their unbeaten streak after edging out hosts Club Wamco in epic tiebreaker in a tightly-contested match which kept the stadium alive, with boisterous Nepali fans, many of them immigrants in the Maldives, passionately cheering for their team.

Club Wamco made a strong start to secure the thrilling first set 25-21. Despite the loss, Nepal Police Club regained their composure in the second set, bouncing back mightily to win 25-20 and level it at 1-1.

The third set was an intense back-and-forth, but Club Wamco’s star spiker, Kuttika Kaewpin of Thailand pushed the determined team to a 25-21 victory. However, Nepal Police Club held their nerves to clinch the fourth set 25-18 and maintained their impressive form to secure a decisive fifth set 15-13 for the eventual comeback 3-2 victory.

Bhandari Usha chipped in 18 points from 14 attacks, one block and 3 aces for Nepal Police Club, while outside hitter Kuttika Kaewpin scored a match-high 30 points on the Club Waco’s loss.

Both teams fared well in the blocking game, getting 4 stuffs apiece, but Nepal Police Club did a very good job of leading their opponents in kills (70 to 52) and aces (13 to 5). However, Club Wamco benefitted from more opponent errors (40 to 20).

Earlier, the day began with a one-sided match between Sri Lanka Air Force and VC Diamed of Tajikistan, which saw the former cruise to an exceptional 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-18) win against the latter. 

Kaushalya Godella Waththa was the most productive player of Sri Lanka Air Force to register 12 points, while no player of VC Diamed reached double digits in scoring against the opponents, with Aqnazarova Gurdofarid scoring only 7 points including 4 attacks from 14 attempts for the unfancied Tajik side.

In the second encounter, Humo VC of Uzbekistan dominated Maldives Police Club, taking the match in comfortable straight sets 25-12, 25-15, 25-10. 

Olimova Malikabonu delivered 11 points including 9 attacks from 12 attempts for Humor VC on a day when the fast-improving Uzbek side displayed their excellent form. Rashidha Hawwa led Maldives Police Club with 7 points. 

After four-day matches, Nepal Police Club flexed their muscles with 11 points from four straight wins to stay atop the six-team standing, while Humo VC of Uzbekistan are trailing in close second place with 9 points from 3 wins against one loss.

Maldives’ Club Wamco came in third place with 7 points from 2 wins against 2 losses, while Sri Lanka Air Force finished fourth with one point behind from similar performances of 2 wins against 2 losses. Maldives Police Club are in fifth position with 3 points from one win against 3 losses, as VC Diamed of Tajikistan have yet won a single set in the one-week tournament to finish on the bottom sixth with no point awarded.

Friday marks the last day of round-robin preliminaries, where all participating teams will be ranked according to their performances. Their rankings will determine the matchups on the final day on Saturday, September 21. Regarding the tournament format, top two teams will face off in the championship final, while teams ranked third and fourth will contest the bronze-medal match. The fifth and sixth-ranked teams will play a classification match to determine the fifth position.
