Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, March 8, 2020 – With the Asian Continental Cup action starting here Tuesday, two women’s teams scheduled to compete in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualifying event played in the finals of the last event on the 2019-2020 New Zealand domestic tour.
Shaunna Polley and Julia Tilley of New Zealand won their country’s final event this season by posting a 2-0 (21-18, 21-18) win over Loti Joe and Linline Matauatu of Vanuatu. The title was the fifth for Polley and Tilley on the New Zealand circuit this season.
Both pairs will represent their country starting Tuesday as Polley and Tilley will be competing on the Kiwi squad with Francesca Kirwan/Olivia MacDonald. Joe and Matauatu will on the Vanuatu team with Miller Pata/Sherysyn Toko.
To reach Sunday’s finale, Polley and Tilley posted a 2-0 (21-19, 21-18) win over Kirwan and MacDonald. Joe and Matauatu advanced to the title match with a 2-1 (24-26, 21-14, 15-11) over Canadians Amanda Harnett and Marie-Christine Lapointe.
Joining New Zealand and Vanuatu in the women’s Mount Maunganui Continental Cup competition are pairs from Fiji and the Solomon Islands. In the men’s division, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Samoa, Solomon Islands and Tuvalu are scheduled to compete.
Men’s competition begins Tuesday after for the teams from Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands and Tuvalu with host New Zealand and Australia starting play Wednesday along with the four women’s team. The finals will be played Thursday with the winning men’s and women’s team advancing to the Asian Continental Cup finals in June.
