Pasig City, Philippines, August 21, 2022 – Japan powered a 3-0 win (25-18, 25-19, 25-22) against Thailand in Pool B of the preliminary round of the 2022 AVC Cup for Women at the PhilSports Arena.
Outside hitter Yuki Nishikawa ignited the Japanese offense, leading all scorers on the field with 20 points (19 attacks, 1 ace). Thailand’s Chatchu-on Moksri delivered 10 points off the bench in the defeat.
Sunday afternoon’s match at the Philsports Arena highlighted breathtaking rallies, with both teams covering the floor well to play in transition.
The Japanese side showed so much cohesion amidst variety in running the offense. Setter Mika Shibata knew she could rely on her hitters, and she clearly made the right decisions at the right context of the situation. Outside hitters Miyu Nakagawa and Nishikawa were easily and readily available at any time the plays are called for them.
Thailand tried to improve their tempo as they played in their substitutes Chatchu-on and setter Sirima Manakij brought upon a new approach as they were able to connect with more plays.
Teams went to chase the side-out after another in the third set. Chatchu-on together with Pimpichaya Kokram delivered the crucial points to help bring the Thais closer to their opponents. Japan played along the side-outs and later seized their momentum in the final set, with Nishikawa delivering match point from the left flank.
The Japanese are looking for their first title in the competition. Their best finish was in the 6th edition in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand in 2018.
“We want to improve on our offensive play and that will be our goal for the next game,” Japan captain Shibata said.
Japan’s next match is schedule for Monday, August 22, as they play Chinese Taipei at 10:00. In a later match, Thailand will face Australia at 16:00. All times local.
