OSAKA BREAK AWAY WITH SIX POINTS FROM DOUBLE HEADER WITH AICHI

Osaka’s Yuji Nishida celebrates

Osaka Bluteon achieved two four-set wins over JTEKT Stings Aichi at home and broke away at the top of the men’s Daido Life SV.League current standings in Japan. Wolfdogs Nagoya capitalized on the situation to overtake Aichi in second place, as the 10 matches of the 11th leg were played from Friday to Sunday.

On Saturday, Osaka Bluteon claimed a 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 20-25, 25-22) victory over JTEKT Stings Aichi. Their opposite Yuji Nishida topped the match charts with 20 points, including three kill blocks and two aces. Outside hitters Miguel Lopez of Cuba and Thomas Jaeschke of the United States added 18 and 16 points, respectively. On the other side of the net, opposite Kento Miyaura led the way with 18 points, while American outside Torey DeFalco finished with 16. On Sunday, the hosts achieved another four-set win to improve to a 17-3 win-loss ratio and 51 points on top of the table and push Aichi down to third place on 16-6 and 42. This time Lopez was the best scorer with a 22-point (two blocks, one ace) contribution towards the 3-1 (26-28, 25-19, 27-25, 25-23) comeback win. Jaeschke added 14 and Nishida – 12. Miyaura and DeFalco scored 18 each for Aichi.

“We had a very good game today. Both teams played great and we fought until the end. The players, who came on as substitutes, also played well and I think it was a win that we really achieved as a team. There are still many games to play,” commented Osaka’s French head coach Laurent Tillie.

Wolfdogs Nagoya hammered out two shutouts of Nagano Tridents and rose to second place on 16-6 and 48, leaving the opponents second from the bottom, in ninth place on 4-16 and 10. In the first match, Dutch opposite Nimir Abdel-Aziz fired four aces to contribute a match-high 16 points towards a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-18) victory. In the second, Slovenian outside Tine Urnaut led the winners with 14 points towards a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-22) sweep.

Fourth-placed Suntory Sunbirds Osaka improved to 14-6 and 43 after two four-set wins at home over Toray Arrows Shizuoka, who are still eighth on 5-15 and 15. On Saturday, the defending champions achieved a 3-1 (26-24, 25-18, 23-25, 25-8) victory with Russian opposite Dmitriy Muserskiy leading the way with 26 points. On Sunday, Muserskiy put up a fantastic six kill blocks towards another 26-point match high in a 3-1 (25-20, 20-25, 28-26, 25-23) win.

Tokyo Great Bears stayed in fifth place, now on 14-8 and 42, after two away wins at Voreas Hokkaido. In Friday’s 3-0 (25-11, 29-27, 25-21) shutout, sub-in outside Masahiro Yanagida led the way with 12 points. On Saturday, the home team put up a tough fight to open a two-set lead, but the guests from the capital once again celebrated victorious, 3-2 (23-25, 22-25, 27-25, 25-16, 15-9). This time, Polish opposite Maciej Muzaj led the winners with 21 points. Despite the point gained, Voreas are still stuck to the bottom 10th place on 1-19 and 8.

Sixth-placed Hiroshima Thunders widened the distance from seventh-placed Nippon Steel Sakai Blazers with two away wins over this opponent that lifted them to 10-12 and 29, against 7-13 and 24 for Sakai. In the first match between the two table neighbours, Felipe Roque put away an amazing match high of 45 points towards a 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 15-12) victory. On Sunday, the Brazilian opposite fired as many as five aces to lead his team to a 3-1 (25-22, 27-25, 18-25, 25-18) success with a total of 24 points.

The SV.League programme will offer another full set of five double headers next weekend, January 11 and 12.
