POOL LEADERS CONFIRMED ON DAY 3 OF AVC CHALLENGE CUP FOR WOMEN

Gresik, East Java, Indonesia, June 20, 2023 – Home team Indonesia, Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan savored victory against their respective opponents on Day 3 of the 2023 AVC Challenge Cup for Women.

Tuesday’s roster of matches at the Tri Dharma Petrokimia Gresik Gymnasium brings the Preliminary Round to a close, with Indonesia, Chinese Taipei, India and Vietnam going into the Classification matches as pool leaders.

The crowd in Gresik City turned up to cheer for their hometown heroes in the main event, as Indonesia defeated Philippines in straight sets 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-10) in Pool A of competition. Megawati Hangestri Pertiwi, a main fixture in Coach M. Alim Suseno’s starting six, scored 13 points. Outside hitter Mediol Stiovanny Yoku likewise contributed in double-digits, with 11 markers.

In an earlier match, Chinese Taipei claimed the top spot in Pool B by sweeping Iran 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-13). As with the host team, Chinese Taipei have not dropped a single set so far in the competition. They posted service pressure and effective block defense which evidently paid off to seal their victory.

In Pool D, Uzbekistan savored their first taste of victory after outplaying Mongolia in the decider 3-2 (25-20, 14-25, 15-25, 25-16, 15-10). Boymirzayeva Dilnoza scored 19 points and mostly delivered in key moments that helped push for the tie-break. By the fifth set, she helped Uzbekistan surge forth and close out with her unstoppable presence at the middle.

Pools cross over in the Classification matches on Wednesday, which would plot the match-ups for the Quarter-finals set on Friday.  Semi-finals matches are scheduled on Saturday, with the competition culminating with the Finals on Sunday, June 25.

With its revamped formula, the AVC Challenge Cup will now allocate ranking points to all participating teams.

The winners will book a spot in the FIVB Volleyball Challenger Cup (scheduled July 27-30, 2023), where the eventual winners will proceed to participate in the Volleyball Nations League in 2024.
