Tehran, Iran, September 15, 2019 – Qatar powered past Sri Lanka 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-15) at the SMM 20th Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship at the12,000-seater Azadi Sports Complex on Sunday to claim their first win in the topflight competition.

Ahmed Noaman Jamal chipped in with 16 points for Qatar including 12 attacks from 25 attemps, while Belal Abunabot added 11 points including a team-leading 7 blocks. Lasindu Wasanthapriya led Sri Lanka with 11 points including 9 attacks from 23 attempts.

Qatar and Sri Lanka did not make the round of the top eight as both teams had already suffered two straight losses to crash out of the highly-anticipated round and will contest the classification for 9th-16th places. However, Qatar still had something to be proud of as they beat Sri Lanka on Sunday to claim their first win ever in this top-tier competition.

“We were in a dead group. The very first match of us was against giant Australia that was the biggest challenge of us. Against Iran, they were ready in full measure and did not let us make a comeback. We won our last match of the preliminary round that is good,” Argentinean Camilo Sotto, head coach of Qatar, commented.
