Qatar Olympic Committee President H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani presided over the conclusion of the five-day 2023 Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Elite 16 for men and women at Aspire Zone in Doha on Sunday.
The awards presentation and closing ceremony were also attended by QOC First Vice President H.E. Mohammed bin Youssef Al Mana, QOC Second Vice President H.E. Dr Thani bin Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, QOC Secretary General H.E. Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain and President of the Qatar Volleyball Association (QVA) and West Asian Volleyball Federation H.E. Ali bin Ghanem Al Kuwari.
Norway’s duo Ander Mol and Christian Sorum claimed the men’s title after a 2-0 victory (21-19, 21-19) over Swedes David Ahman and Jonathan Hellvig. Italians Alex Ranghiri and Adrian Carambula beat Polish duo of Bartosz Losiak and Michal Bryl 2-0 (22-20, 22-20) in the third-place playoff.
In the women’s competition, Dutchwomen Katja Stam and Raisa Schoon captured the crown after defeating the Swiss duo of Nina Brunner and Tania Huberli 2-1 (20-20, 21-14, 15-11). Aussies Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho Del Solar came back to beat Anastasija/Tina 2-1 (12-21, 21-15, 15-10) to take home bronze medal.
Qatar’s Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan were eliminated after a 0-2 loss in the second round. They qualified for the second round after finishing second in Group D of the group stage.
Mr Ali bin Ghanem Al Kuwari expressed his happiness at the success of the tournament, adding that Qatar became one of the first countries in the world beach volleyball rankings, thanks to the claimed titles and coloured medals in all international championships, most notably the bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Mr Al Kuwari said that Qatar hosted many international beach volleyball tournaments, with Aspire Zone having organised the King of the Court 2022 Championships and the Beach Pro Tour Finals. He added that the Qatar Volleyball Association is preparing in the coming period to host the West Asian Championships at Al Gharafa Beach Stadiums at the end of next month.
