Four of the five continental confederations are still represented among the eight teams still alive at Thailand 2025. The only Asian team – Japan – will open the quarterfinal round against the Netherlands in Wednesday’s early fixture. It will be a game between the number four and the number eight teams in the World Ranking. On the way to the quarterfinals, the Netherlands topped Pool A and then dethroned the world champions of the previous two editions – Serbia – in one of the two eighthfinal matches that were pushed to tie-breaker resolutions. Japan took first place in Pool H before knocking hosts Thailand out of contention in a straight-set affair.

Wednesday’s second quarterfinal – between Italy and Poland – is the highest-profile clash among the four as it will feature the world’s number one and the world’s number three teams against one another. In their quest to crown themselves with the World Championship title as well, reigning Olympic and Volleyball Nations League champions Italy won Pool B and mastered a sweep of their eighthfinal against Germany. Poland, on the other hand, topped the final standings in Pool G and then outlasted Belgium in a hard-fought five-setter.

The third quarterfinal, and first on Thursday’s program, will set mighty Brazil against sensational France. The South American team stands second in the World Ranking, while the rising European power is the lowest ranked among the eight quarterfinalists, occupying 13th place in the chart. It will be the second encounter between these two sides at Thailand 2025. In what proved to be the deciding match for the first place in Pool C, France shocked their opponents by winning the first two sets before Brazil could mount a sweeping comeback and win the match. In the eighthfinals, Brazil defeated the Dominican Republic in four sets, while France created the biggest surprise of the tournament so far by beating and knocking out Asian powerhouse China, also in four sets. That loss caused China to drop from number four in the World Ranking before the eighthfinals to number seven right now.

The last semifinalist of the 2025 World Championship will emerge from a duel between the United States and Turkiye – the world’s number six against the world’s number five – on Thursday evening. The Americans were the undefeated winner of Pool D and hammered out a convincing shutout of their neighbors from Canada in the eighthfinals. Reigning European champions Turkiye are still the only team yet to lose a set at this tournament. They swept all three of their matches in Pool E and their eighthfinal against assertive rookies Slovenia.
