RESCHEDULED CAVA BEACH VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2024 KICK OFF AT NEGOMBO BEACH, SRI LANKA

Negombo, Sri Lanka, January 24, 2025 – The CAVA Beach Volleyball Championship 2024 began Friday (January 24) at the picturesque Negombo Beach, Sri Lanka. The double-gender event promises an exciting showdown of skill and athleticism over three days.

A total of 18 teams, 9 apiece in both men’s and women’s divisions, are competing in the rescheduled tournament, which was initially planned to take place last December, but was postponed due to some reasons.

 

The men’s event saw hosts Sri Lanka field 3 teams, with Kazakhstan and Maldives sending two teams each and Iran and Bhutan represented by one team apiece.

In the women’s event, three teams are representing hosts Sri Lanka. Kazakhstan and Maldives sent two teams each and Kyrgyzstan and Bhutan one team apiece.

The women’s division saw some intense matches, with 10 games played on the first day. The day’s highlight could be seen in standout performances from Ryukhova/Karimova (Kazakhstan) and Kasuni/Wasana (Sri Lanka), who dominated their pools. The thrilling three-setter between Rasulbek Kyzy/Aitbekova (Kyrgyzstan) and Deepika/Kasuni (Sri Lanka) kept spectators on edge.

Key results saw Kazakhstan’s Ryukhova/Karimova defeat Bhutanis Zangmo/Leki 2-0 (21-8, 21-10), while hosts Sri Lankans Kasuni/Wasana (SRI) proved too strong for Hawwa/Majidha to beat the Maldivians 2-0 (21-11, 21-17) and Kyrgyzstan’s Rasulbek Kyzy/Aitbekova overcame Zeeniya/Areesha of Maldives with a comeback 2-1 (19-21, 21-14, 15-9) win.

The men’s encounters were equally electrifying, with GhalehNovi/Abolhassan of Iran and Sri Lankans Anjana/Sandun emerging as early favorites. A nail-biting three-set match between Gurin/Mokhammad of Kazakhstan and Maldivians Ismail/Adam ended with Gurin/Mokhammad clinching victory in the decider.

Key results saw experienced Dmitriy Yakovlev/Sergey Bogatu of Kazakhstan defeat Jurme/Dorji of Bhutan 2-0 (21-9, 21-11), while Anjana/Sandun triumphed over Nalin/Madusha 2-1 (21-14, 17-21, 15-12) in the all-Sri Lankans affair and Dileepa/Malith of Sri Lanka stunned Iranian top seeds Amirali GhalehNovi/Abolhassan Khakizadeh 2-1 (26-24, 19-21, 9-15).

Ahead of the competition, Mr Kanchana Jayarathna, president of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation, joined by SLVF Secretary General Mr A.S. Naraka, presided over the opening ceremony and delivered a welcome speech to all participants at the Negombo Beach. 

Meanwhile, the General Technical Meeting was held earlier on Thursday evening, with Technical Delegate Mr Srinivasan Jayaraman, joined by Referee Delegate Mr Hussain Mohamed from Maldives, chairing and all participants attending to hear the rules and regulations of the three-day event.

Mr Srinivasan confirmed the technical, refereeing, medical and other related matters set for the whistle-off of the competition the following day. The competition format and the pooling principle were also introduced during the meeting ahead of the conduction of the drawing of lots for teams with same seeding points.

The championship continues on Saturday with another round of group matches, setting the stage for the quarterfinals. The excitement is building as teams battle it out for the coveted championship titles.
