SHIMADZU ARENA READY TO HOST AVC MEN’S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS IN KYOTO

Kyoto, Japan, May 14, 2025 – The 8,635-seater Shimadzu Arena Kyoto is set for the highly-anticipated quarterfinals of the inaugural AVC Men’s Champions League on Thursday. Eight elite teams will battle it out in this knockout round, with winners advancing to the semifinals and losers eliminated from the high-stakes tournament.

All participating teams have arrived in Kyoto and are accommodated in two official hotels: Hotel Nikko Princess Kyoto and The Prince Kyoto Takaragaike. Teams are making final preparations ahead of their crucial matchups.

Members of the AVC Control Committee (CC), led by CC President Ms Phenyada Fuengtharnthip of Thailand, who also serves as Director of the AVC President’s Office, departed from Candeo Hotels Osaka at noon and were transferred to the Hotel Nikko Princess Kyoto. The delegation included Technical Delegate Mr Raditia Rahmat Darwis (Indonesia), Technical Sub-Committee Member Mr Toshiro Endo (Japan), Referee Sub-Committee Member Mr Shigeru Koshiba (Japan), Competition Technology Director Mr Pavarit Dairinram (Thailand), Medical Delegate Dr Joji Yoshizawa (Japan), Press Delegate Mr Preechachan Wiriyanupappong (Thailand), Official Photographer Mr Izumi Nakagawa (Japan) and AVC Coordinator Mr Antonio Carlos Jr. (Philippines).

Upon arrival, the committee conducted a comprehensive inspection of Shimadzu Arena, reviewing key areas such as the CC room, VIP room, team fitness center, locker rooms, medical facilities, first aid stations, press areas, press conference room, team benches, and the Mixed Zone.

They also assessed technological setups including the Challenger System and internet connectivity to ensure smooth operations during the tournament.

 

Following the venue inspection, Ms Phenyada, Mr Darwis, and Mr Endo conducted additional checks at the team hotels, confirming that all arrangements are in place and ready for the competition days.

The quarterfinals will feature two matches on May 15 (all local times)

 • Aqtobe VC (Kazakhstan) vs Al-Rayyan SC (Qatar) at 15:05

 • Suntory Sunbirds Osaka (Japan) vs Muharraq Club (Bahrain) at 19:05

The remaining two quarterfinal duels will take place on May 16

 • Shanghai Bright VC (China) vs Foolad Sirjan Iranian (Iran) at 15:05

 • Osaka Bluteon (Japan) vs Nakhon Ratchasima Qmin C VC (Thailand) at 19:05

Winners of these matches will move on to the semifinals on May 17. The semifinal losers will compete for third place, while the finalists will battle for the first-ever AVC Men’s Champions League title. Notably, the top two finishers will also earn tickets for the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship later this year.
