Son Seoyeon shines bright as AVC U16 MVP, leads Korea to volleyball glory

Korea’s Son Seoyeon emerged as the best player in Asia in her age group after a dazzling display of skill, consistency, and leadership

The Korean team captain was named as the Most Valuable Player and the 1st Best Outside Spiker of the 2nd AVC Asian Women’s U16 Volleyball Championship, moments after outlasting Chinese Taipei in an epic five-set final, 26-28, 25-21, 25-11, 19-25, 15-13, on Sunday at the Prince Hamzah Sports Hall.

Son delivered 30 points in the final to win the AVC U16 championship in their first appearance. 

The 15-year-old outside spiker was the best scorer of the tournament with 141 points built on 123 kills, 11 blocks, and seven aces and also the top attacker.

“I didn’t expect this. It’s a great honor to win the MVP in this championship, playing against the best players. It’s a great feeling,” said Son.

Korea head coach Lee Seungyeo was proud of Son for leading the team to a championship before heading to the 2026 FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U17 World Championship in Santiago, Chile.

“She deserved to win the MVP. She is a great player and has a capacity to get even better,” said coach Lee.

Joining Son among the tournament’s dream team was her teammate Lee Dayeon, who won the Best Middle Blocker award and Best Setter Lee Seoin.

Chinese Taipei’s Chen Ting-Yi was the other Best Outside Spiker. Chang Yun-Chen was the Best Opposite Spikers. The Best Libero was also from the silver medalist in Wu Xin-Yun, while China’s Chen Xinyi earned the other Best Middle Blocker distinction.
