Sri Lanka celebrate their victory over Kyrgyzstan
Male, Maldives, July 20, 2024 – Sri Lanka delivered a stunning performance to defeat Kyrgyzstan in a high-octane match on the last day of the single pool round-robin preliminaries, stopping the opponents’ unbeaten streak in a hard-fought five-set thriller of the CAVA Women’s U20 Volleyball Championship here on Saturday.
With both teams entering the match undefeated, the atmosphere was electric as Sri Lanka and Kyrgyzstan faced off. The match extended to two hours, showcasing a fierce competition that ultimately saw Sri Lanka emerge victorious in an epic tie-breaker (25-16, 19-25, 24-26, 25-17, 15-10).
Herath Mudiyanseiage chipped in 16 points from 13 attacks and 3 blocks for Sri Lanka, while Rasulbek Kyzy Roza led Kyrgyzstan with 18 points from 16 kills and 2 blocks.
The Sri Lanka’s dominance could not be clearly decided through match stats alone as both sides came up with almost similar standard with the similar 42 points scored through attacks and another similar 8 points on blocks. Kyrgyzstan fared better on aces (7 to 5), but the Sri Lankans benefitted from more opponent error (53 to 37).
In another notable game, hosts Maldives faced disappointment as they suffered their third consecutive loss at the hands of Nepal, going down in lopsided straight sets 16-25, 9-25, 10-25 in 56 minutes. The home crowd was left disheartened as Nepal dominated the match, adding to their own tally of wins.
Sunar Mina delivered 11 points from 7 attacks, 2 blocks and 2 aces for Nepal, while Solah Maaya Hussain scored 9 points on the Maldives’ loss.
At the end of the single round-robin contest on Saturday, unbeaten Sri Lanka topped the charge with 8 points from three straight wins, followed by Kyrgyzstan with one point behind from two wins against one loss. Nepal had 3 points from one win against two losses to come in third place, with hosts Maldives on the bottom fourth with no point earned from three straight losses.
Teams will have a rest day on Sunday. The competition resumes on Monday, July 22, with first-ranked Sri Lanka taking on fourth-placed Maldives and second-ranked Kyrgyzstan challenging third-placed Nepal in the do-or-die semifinals. The two winning teams will then fight it out in the Tuesday’s final showdown, while the two losers will contest the third-place playoff for bronze medal.
