SRI LANKA TO HOST INAUGURAL CAVA BEACH VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP FROM FEB 18 TO 20

Bangkok, Thailand, February 17, 2022 – Determined players from five countries will strut their stuff in the 1st Central Asian Volleyball Association (CAVA) Beach Volleyball Championship, which will take place at Negombo Beach in Sri Lanka between February 18 and 20, 2022.

Being organised by Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation, the inaugural competition has attracted players of 16 pairs including 10 in the men’s event to strive for success in the three-day tournament.

Hosts Sri Lanka are sending 3 pairs in the men’s event, with Iran, Maldives and Pakistan fielding 2 pairs apiece and Uzbekistan sending one, while the women’s category sees Sri Lanka send three teams, Maldives two and Uzbekistan one.

Participating teams in both men’s and women’s events will be similarly divided into two groups for the group round-robin preliminaries. Only top two teams from each group in both events will advance to the semifinals.

Matches will be played from 8.30am to 9pm between February 18 and 20, 2022, while the finals in both events will be played on Sunday (February 20) evening.

Meanwhile, CAVA President Mr Mohamed Latheef from Maldives, tournament officials and participating players all arrived in Sri Lanka, ready for the unprecedented event. Preliminary enquiry has already been conducted, with Control Committee checking documents collected from participating teams and hearing them.

The Control Committee, chaired by CAVA President Mr Mohamed Latheef, held a meeting earlier to discuss relevant matters ahead of the competition and at the same time, the meeting had agreed in principle that the FIVB BVIS system will be used in the inaugural CAVA Beach Volleyball Championship, while the FIVB Rules of the Game will also be in force.

Aside from CAVA President Mr Mohamed Latheef, the Control Committee Members comprised Mr Rathnamudali (Technical Delegate), Mr Sirinevrsan (Technical Supervisor), Mr Hussain Mohammed (Referee Delegate) and Mr Hussain Fariyaad (CAVA Media Director).

The General Technical Meeting is set to be held on Thursday evening at Goldi Sands Beach Hotel Negombo in SriLanka.
