Pasig City, Philippines, April 21, 2025 – Chinese Taipei’s Taipower zoomed to the top of Pool B of the 1st AVC Women’s Volleyball Champions League, after a 3-1 defeat (25-15, 25-16,19-25, 25-20) of the Philippines’ Petro Gazz Angels on Monday afternoon at the PhilSports Arena.
Taipower outside hitters Hsu Wan-Yun and Tsai Yu-Chun opened fire from the flanks to help establish a good lead in the first set.
Brooke Van Sickle and Mar Jana Phillips combined their efforts for Petro Gazz Angels but the home team struggled with their share of unforced errors.
In the second set, Taipower activated the middle attack through Hu Xiao-Pei’s efforts, rendering more variety in offense options for the Chinese Taipei side. They also enforced stronger service and unleashed aces to help seal the second set.
By the third set, Petro Gazz Angels energized their offense, and played more cohesively as a team. They were able to convert upon transition plays, as they showed better defense and passing. Coach Koji Tsuzurabara also made the right decision in enlisting Aiza Pontillas from the bench, as she delivered in clutch plays that powered the third set win.
The Philippine side tried to keep their momentum, running their plays on the usual hitters, hoping to get the most of their firepower.
However, Taipower returned to form, with Peng Yu-Rou adding to the scoreboard. They gained more from the service winners, which threw off their opponents’ passing unit, helping the Chinese Taipei side score off the home team’s attack errors.
Taipower will enjoy consecutive rest days as they await their match-up in the quarterfinal round. Petro Gazz will look to win against Hong Kong, China’s Hip Hing on Tuesday in the main event at 19:00 local time.
