Phnom Penh, Cambodia, February 22, 2019 – Takemi Nishibori and Ayumi Kusano led the four Japanese teams that advanced to the Round of 16 at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Phnom Penh 2-star on Friday.
The second-seeded Take and Kusano logged two victories to dominate Pool B, where compatriots Chiyo Suzuki/Yurika Sakaguchi and Sakurako Fujii/Minori Kumada recorded one win apiece in pool play.
Take and Kusano defeated Switzerland’s Kim Huber and Melina Hubscher 2-0 (21-16, 21-18), before claiming a 2-0 (21-19, 23-21) win in the next match against Chiyo and Sakaguchi.
Top seeds Sayaka Mizoe and Suzuka Hashimoto cruised to an easy 2-0 (21-3, 21-2) win over the host team but conceded their next match to Pool A winners Martina Bonnerova and Martina Maixnerova of the Czech Republic in a three-set encounter (21-17, 16-21, 18-16).
Another Czech pair – Michala Kvapilova and Michaela Kubickova – also topped their pool after straight-set triumphs against Australia’s Nikki Laird and Becchara Palmer and the United States’ Amanda Dowdy and Corinne Quiggle.
USA’s Caitlin Ledoux/Geena Urango and Carly Wopat/Brittany Hochevar, and Lithuania’s Urte Andriukaityte/Vytene Vitkauskaite claimed two wins in their respective pools.
