Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, January 9, 2020 – Thailand will face Kazakhstan in the semifinals after a convincing 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-13) win over Australia in their last match in Pool A at the AVC Women’s Tokyo Volleyball Qualification tournament at Chatchai Hall in Nakhon Ratchasima on Thursday.
Thailand team captain Nootsara Tomkom said: “I think today everyone did a good job and players from the bench had a chance to show their potential. Our reception was better than the last match. For the next match against Kazakhstan, I think they are a good team with some experienced players in the team.
“They play in a European style with high blocking and they are faster than Australia. We have to reduce our simple mistakes a lot more to challenge them. If we can’t reduce our own mistakes, it will be even harder to play against them and get through to the final. However, we will try our best to play in the final.”
Thailand head coach Danai Sriwacharamaytakul said: “It is a game during which we wanted to develop our playing system and players. There are some errors that we have to improve on to play against Kazakhstan.”
“I am quite satisfied with my team performance. According to the Kazakhstan and Korea match today, I think Kazakhstan played quite well but their movement is quite slow. Their attacking is quite aggressive with huge blocking as well. We have to be well prepared in order to face them in the semifinals.”
Australia head coach Martin Collins said: “We know that Thailand are a very strong team. We are very happy to get a better result and manage to move a little bit quicker and adjust in some ways. We have to keep learning against great teams like Thailand who have a little bit different style of playing from the last match we played. We have to keep learning what works.
“We always enjoy and have fun playing the host country. We don’t often get a chance to play in front of a big crowd like this in Australia. Even though the crowd belongs to the other team, we also enjoy it. Our next big event will be the Asian Cup.”
Australia team captain Kelly Lean said: “Obviously we feel disappointed with the result, but we are happy that we tried something to bring it to the game. We just have to learn what we can from each game.”
