Manama, Bahrain, August 3, 2024 – Thailand will vie for fifth place in the 15th Asian Men’s U18 Volleyball Championship after defeating Chinese Taipei 3-1 (26-24, 25-21, 17-25, 25-22) in their opening fixture of the classification round 5th-8th.
The Thais banked on a team-wide effort to come away triumphant in a tightly contested clash. They will next take on the winners of the match between Bahrain and Korea in their concluding fixture on Sunday.
Five players finished in double figures in their win, led by 16 of Kongkraphan Nimlamun. Sorasak Phunsanong added 14 and Kiarttisak Seta scored 13, while Krittin Damji and Jirayu Simtama had 12 points apiece.
Hu Jun-Xiang had 17, while Tsai Chen-Yu added 14 and Tsai Tsung-Jui had 13 for Chinese Taipei, which will play for seventh place overall to end the competition.
Meanwhile, at the second hall, Hong Kong, China downed Kuwait 3-1 (25-18, 25-27, 25-21, 25-14) in classification battle for 13th-16th places.
Hong Kong, China were in control for much of the contest but allowed the Kuwaitis to get their maiden set victory of the tournament in the third.
Ko Ching Kin then stepped up and scored seven of his team-high 31 points in the fourth set to help his team regain their composure and close out the match.
Yim Ka Lok added 14 for Hong Kong, China, while Naser Alsane was the top scorer for Kuwait with 15.
Hong Kong, China will play for 13th in the final classification on Sunday, while Kuwait will battle for 15th place.
