- Suzuka Hashimoto & Reika Murakami cruise through the women’s competition on the Japan Beach Volleyball Tour’s stop in Matsuyama without dropping a set
- Kai Kurokawa & Ryuichi Adachi produce two comeback upsets to top the men’s podium
JAPAN
The ninth stop on the 2024 Japan Beach Volleyball Tour took place in Matsuyama last week. Third-seeded Suzuka Hashimoto & Reika Murakami cruised through the women’s tournament without dropping a single set to top the podium. In the final (pictured in the main photo; credits: jva.or.jp), they mastered a 2-0 (21-14, 21-16) victory over top-seeded Asami Shiba & Saki Maruyama, who settled for silver. No bronze medal match was played and the teams who lost to the eventual finalists in the semifinals – qualifiers Riko Tsujimura & Takemi Nishibori and Sakura Ito & Chiyo Suzuki, respectively – finished jointly in third place.

The men’s trophy in Matsuyama went to fourth-seeded Kai Kurokawa & Ryuichi Adachi after a three-set battle in the gold medal showdown. They celebrated a 2-1 (17-21, 21-19, 15-9) win over second-seeded Takumi Takahashi & Jumpei Ikeda. Also after a three-set turnaround, Kai & Adachi produced a semifinal win over top-seeded Hiroki Dylan Kurokawa & Yoshiumi Hasegawa, who shared the third place with the third-seeded Japanese-German pairing of Yusuke Ishijima (Gottsu) & Martin Kaufer.
