THOUSANDS OF FANS ENJOY HIGH-ENERGY VOLLEYBALL AT YEMEN’S EID AL-FITR CHAMPIONSHIP

Al Ittihad emerged champions after beating Al Qadisiyah in straight sets in the final

Thousands of volleyball fans in Yemen were treated to an electrifying week of top-tier competition as the country’s premier clubs gathered at Al Wahda Sports Club in the Tarim district for the annual Eid al-Fitr Championship, held from 2 to 10 April.

Hosted annually in Hadhramaut, the championship is one of Yemen’s most anticipated volleyball events, featuring elite teams from across the country. This year’s edition brought together 10 clubs, drawn into three competitive groups.

The tournament culminated in a thrilling gold medal match on 10 April, played under the floodlights before a crowd of over 5,000 fans. In a dominant performance, Al Ittihad swept past Al Qadisiyah in straight sets, 3-0 (27-25, 26-24, 25-20), to claim the title. Thousands more tuned in via social media, showcasing the tournament’s wide-reaching appeal.

The closing ceremony was graced by prominent figures including Al Wahda Sports Club President Omar Abdullah Bashayouth, Vice President Najib Salem Barfeed, Secretary General Ali Suwaidan, and Captain Karama Ali Subaih, a member of the Supreme Competitions Committee of the Yemeni Volleyball Federation.

Tournament Format and Results:

  • Group 1: Al Ittihad (Nuwaidrah), Al Qadisiyah (Bakhila), Al Salam (Al Souq), Al Ettifaq (Al Khalif)
  • Group 2: Al Tahtaf (Al Muhaidrah), Al Shabab (Hisn Awad), Al Sharara (Damoun)
  • Group 3: Al Shabab (Al Matar), Al Masarra (Tarim), Al Ittihad (Al Fujairah)

After the group stage, Al Ittihad of Nuwaidrah topped Group 1 and advanced to the semi-finals, where they faced Group 2 winners Al Tahtaf (Al Muhaidrah). Meanwhile, Group 1 runners-up Al Qadisiyah (Bakhila) took on Group 3 leaders Al Shabab (Al Matar) in the other semi-final.

  • Semi-final results:
    • Al Qadisiyah defeated Al Shabab 3-1 (25-20, 26-28, 25-21, 25-23)
    • Al Ittihad outlasted Al Tahtaf in a five-set thriller, 3-2 (15-25, 25-19, 17-25, 25-19, 15-10)

These results set the stage for the final showdown, where Al Ittihad emerged victorious to lift the championship trophy.
