Ningbo, China, September 22, 2023 – Top 16 teams were confirmed after the last round in Pool Play of the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 Women’s Beach Competition held Friday here at Xiangshan Beach Volleyball Center.
In Pool A, top seeds Xue/Xia of China grabbed their fourth consecutive win to top the pool with unbeaten record after breezing past Shin/Kim of Korea 2-0 (21-8, 21-5) within 16 minutes.
Rodriguez/Eslapor of Philippines conquered Deepika/Chathurika of Sri Lanka 2-0 (21-10, 21-17) and secured the second place in Pool A with a 3-1 record. The Sri Lankan pair were ranked the fourth with a 1-3 record sitting behind Kabulbekova/Ivanchenko of Kazakhstan with 2-2. Winless Korean duo finished on the bottom of the pool and had to say goodbye to the tournament.
In Pool B, second seeds Naraphornrapat/Kongphopsarutawadee of Thailand advanced without sweating to top the pool with a remarkable 4-0 record. Their opponents Progella/Matibag of Philippines forfeited the match due to injury, but they still booked a ticket to top 16 as the pool’s third place with a 2-2 record.
Pool B had a battle of spotlight of the day, seeing Wong/To of Hong Kong, China claim their maiden victory against winless Tam/Lei of Macao, China and thus squeezed into Top 16 as the pool’s fourth place with a 1-3 record. Macao, China pair ended their journey at the Games.
The pool’s second place belonged to Juliana/Ratnasari of Indonesia, who registered 3 wins and 1 loss.
In Pool C, Phirachayakrailert/Patcharamainaruebhorn of Thailand had a breathtaking but happy-ending day as they nosed out Law/Leong of Macao, China 2-0 (21-11, 26-24) in the morning and edged out Yuen/Lo of Hong Kong, China 2-1 (21-17, 18-21, 15-11) in the afternoon.
With a 3-1 record, they ranked the second in the pool following unbeaten Mizoe/Ishii of Japan, who outpowered Lee/Jeon of Korea 2-0 (21-6, 21-11).
The pairs of Macao and Hong Kong, China respectively snatched the third and fourth places with 2-2 and 1-3 record. Winless Korea crashed out of the competition and packed their bags.
In Pool D, No. 5 seeds Wang/Dong of China had a field day as they vanquished Rachenko/Ukolova of Kazakhstan 2-0 (21-8, 21-11) in the morning and overwhelmed Sari/Herdanti of Indonesia 2-0 (21-13, 21-12) in the evening.
They took the top spot in the pool followed by Hasegawa/Sakaguchi of Japan with a 3-1 record including a one-sided 2-0 (21-6, 21-4) win against Badalbekova/Khurshedodova of Tajikistan.
The pairs of Indonesia and Kazakhstan were ranked third and fourth places in the pool with 2-2 and 1-3 record respectively.
The drawing of lots for the elimination round of 16 was held in the evening after the end of preliminary round. Teams will have one day break Saturday for Opening Ceremony of the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 to adjust themselves and prepare for the next round. Winners will play quarterfinals on Monday. The final showdown will be held Wednesday on September 27.
Ningbo, the second largest city of Zhejiang Province, enjoys a long history of over 7,000 years with plenty of historical and religious sites. Served as one of the co-host cities for the 19th Asian Games, Ningbo will host two events of beach volleyball and sailing in its coastal Xiangshan County. The 19th Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou, capital city of Zhejiang from September 23 to October 8, 2023.
