TURKMENISTAN, KYRGYZSTAN REMAIN UNSCATHED, AS HOSTS UZBEKISTAN SUFFER SETBACK ON ACTION-PACKED DAY 3 OF CAVA MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP  

Tashkent, Uzbekistan, October 20, 2024 – Day 3 of the 2024 CAVA Men’s Volleyball Championship at the JAR Sport Complex witnessed intense matches, marking Afghanistan’s first win of the tournament, while Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan maintained their unbeaten streaks and hosts Uzbekistan succumbed to their first defeat.

 

Kyrgyzstan beat Uzbekistan 3-2

In one of the most exciting matches of the day, Kyrgyzstan produced a terrific comeback to edge out hosts Uzbekistan in epic tie-breaker. 

Uzbekistan took the comfortable first set 25-18, but Kyrgyzstan fought back, winning the second and third sets in tight contests 26-24, 25-23. However, Uzbekistan, backed by a large crowd of home crowd at the venue, regained their composure to win the thrilling fourth set 25-22, forcing the tie-breaker.

As the host side momentarily lost their focus and lost some important points, Kyrgyzstan went on their fine form for a fantastic 15-11 win in the decider and match, handing Uzbekistan their first loss of the tournament.

Uulu Medetbek played a big part of the Kyrgyzstan’s victory, registering 18 points from 11 attacks, 6 blocks and one ace. Ogabek Haydarov delivered a match-high 22 points including 18 kills from 38 attempts, with Yahyo Mukhammadiyev and Islomjon Sobirov adding 21 and 17 points respectively on the Uzbekistan’s loss.

 

As Kyrgyzstan dominated the blocking game, getting 14 stuffs and benefitting from more opponent error (29 to 25), hosts Uzbekistan fared better in kills (70 to 62) and aces (5 to 2).

Turkmenistan beat Tajikistan 3-0

Turkmenistan, fresh from beating Afghanistan and Maldives in their first two encounters, put in an impressive performance in their match against Tajikistan on Sunday.

Their strong serves and solid defensive work left the opponents struggling to keep pace, securing an effortless straight-set 25-14, 25-18, 25-14 win.

Didar Nuryyev and Ylham Allaberdiyev led Turkmenistan with 8 points apiece, while Dovletgeldi Annabayev, Bayramgeldi Veyisov and Mithun Gulyyev added 6 points each. Muhsini Ruustamzoda scored 10 points including 8 attacks from 13 attempts on the Tajikistan’s loss.

Afghanistan beat Maldives 3-0

Afghanistan registered their first victory on Sunday after powering past Maldives in well-fought three setter. The first two sets saw Afghanistan pull ahead with steady attacks and consistent blocking to win 25-19, 25-18. The third set was closely-contested as the spirited Maldives bounced back bravely in an effort of winning the set and seeking another chance of comeback. Still, Afghanistan maintained their momentum to close it out 28-26.

Kohistani Naser was a consistent weapon for Afghanistan, as he scored a match-high 22 points from 18 kills and 4 blocks, while Sajid Ismail contributed 21 points from 17 kills and 4 blocks on the Maldives’ loss.

At the end of Day 3 on Sunday, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan had the similar performance with 8 points from three straight wins, but the former surged to the top of the standing with better points ratio.

Hosts Uzbekistan finished third with 7 points from two wins against one loss, with Afghanistan in fourth place with 3 points from one win against two losses. Maldives and Tajikistan similarly lost three matches in a row to come in fifth and sixth places respectively.

Monday, October 21, is the rest day for recovery. The action resumes on October 22 as the single round-robin preliminaries continue through October 23. The tournament will then proceed to the classification, bronze-medal, and gold-medal matches on October 24, the final day of the one-week tournament.

Top two teams from this championship will qualify for the next year’s CAVA Volleyball Nations League.
