UZBEKISTAN OUT TO TEST THEIR METTLE IN ISLAMIC SOLIDARITY GAMES IN TURKEY

Bangkok, Thailand, August 8, 2022 – The Uzbekistan women’s national volleyball team are taking part in the 2021 Islamic Solidarity Games, the 5th edition of the event scheduled to be held at Karatay Congress and Sport Centre in Konya, Turkey from August 8 to 15, 2022, with seven teams vying for top honour in the women’s tournament.

The Games were originally scheduled to take place from August 20 to 29, 2021 in Konya, but in May 2020, the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF), who are responsible for the direction and control of the Islamic Solidarity Games, postponed the Games as the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan were also postponed to July and August 2021, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Uzbekistan are in Pool A with hosts Turkey and Indonesia, while Pool B comprises Cameroon, Azerbaijan, Senegal and Afghanistan. The pool round-robin preliminaries kicked off on August 8, which saw the host side brush off Uzbekistan in comfortable straight sets 25-13, 25-3, 25-15.

Early this year, Uzbekistan participated in the CAVA (Central Asian Volleyball Association) Challenge Cup at Shaheed Suhrawardy National Indoor Stadium in Mirpur, Bangladesh in December 2021 and returned with silver medal. Six teams competed in the tournament consisting of Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives and Kyrgyzstan.

Uzbekistan pick up silver at CAVA Challenge Cup

Uzbekistan also competed in the 3rd AVC Women’s Challenge Cup, which was held in coincidence with the 21st Princess Cup Volleyball Championship in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand between June 24 and 29, 2022. Uzbekistan pulled off a convincing 3-0 win against Singapore in the single round-robin tournament to finish fourth place in the Challenge Cup, which was eventually won by Hong Kong, China.
