Jiangmen, China, July 7, 2024 – Vietnam proved their superiority over India to annihilate the lower-ranked opponents in an easy affair 25-15, 25-12, 25-18 in their classification round for 5th-8th places in the 22nd Asian Women’s U20 Volleyball Championship at Jiangmen Sports Center Gymnasium here on Sunday.
Middle blocker Le Nhu Anh chipped in 11 points from 10 attacks and one ace for Vietnam, while outside hitter Nguyen Lan Vy and opposite Pham Quynh Huong added another 8 and 6 points respectively. Ananthi Arasu scored 13 points including 12 attacks from 25 attempts on the India’s loss.
Vietnam, strong offensively with the likes of Dang Thi Hong, who scored a match-high 37 points in the previous match and was instrumental in lifting the team’s comeback 3-1 win against Kazakhstan on Saturday, got off to a winning start following their 8-4 lead, courtesy of middle blocker Le Nhu Anh’s fast spikes and powerful attacks from opposite Pham Quynh Huong. India put their acts together to counter-attack, but their attempts did not work out well as the Vietnamese went on their much better performance, defensively and offensively. Vietnam clinched the comfortable first set 25-15.
The second set turned out to be one-way traffic as the Vietnamese put a limit on the rivals’ offense with their combination attacks to lead commandingly 13-6 and Le Nhu Anh and Nguyen Lan Vy methodically tore the Indian defense into shreds with their fine attacks to widen it to 23-10. Vietnam allowed the spirited India only two more points to close out the set 25-12.
Holding a 0-2 disadvantage, the Indians tried to turn the tables on Vietnam in the third set. They improved their offense to race to a 7-2 lead. However, they could not maintain the lead since then as Vietnam started to claw their way back into game to catch them at 10-10 and stormed on with that fine form to reach set point 24-18 before Nguyen Phuong Quynh efficiently blocked an aggressive attack from Kavita to put an end to the Indian challenge.
Following the win, Vietnam will next contest the 5th-6th place playoff clash against the winners in the later match between Kazakhstan and Chinese Taipei. India will battle it out with the losers in that match for the 7th position.
