Manila, Philippines, May 22, 2024 – Titleholders Vietnam secured straight sets 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-16) against Hong Kong, China in the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Women.
The champion team of the 2023 edition displayed their dominance in Wednesday’s Pool B encounter at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum, leading in all fields. They scored 48 attacks, 6 blocks and served 4 aces.
Outside Hitter Vi Thi Nhu Quyn scored a match-high 14 points from 13 attacks and a block.
Vietnam played with a strong roster even without their complete starting line-up and scorers. Their frontline led the charge as they fired from the wings with much success. The SAVA side’s service likewise provided a big boost to their performance.
Relying on a deep bench, Vietnam continued their momentum, even during their substitutes’ stints on the court with Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen likewise contributing double-digit markers (11 points).
Hong Kong, China showed that they could orchestrate their offense well, enabling Wing Lam Chim from the flank. However, their opponents clearly showed their advantage in both technique and tactics.
Vietnam coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet needed to rely on his substitutes for their opening match, with the hopes of getting the rest of the team in better shape.
“Perhaps some of my players are not in their 100 per cent condition, but in the coming days, I hope they can come and perform on court. I am still confident that we will have a good chance to win, and hopefully return to the Volleyball World Challenger Cup this year,” he said.
Vietnam captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy watched happily by the sidelines all throughout the match, and remarked on her time so far in the Philippines.
“It’s not my first time here in the Philippines so everything is a little bit familiar. Everyone is friendly ,” she said
On Thursday, Vietnam will face Singapore in the 16:00 match, while Hong Kong will play against 2023 runners-up Indonesia in an earlier match at 10:00. All times local.
