VIRENDER KANWAR ELECTED PRESIDENT OF VOLLEYBALL FEDERATION OF INDIA

New Executive Committee under interim mandate to amend VFI constitution and ensure athlete representation in accordance with FIVB statutes

Virender Kanwar has been elected President of the Volleyball Federation of India (VFI), following an election held on 8 June in New Delhi and observed by representatives from the FIVB, the Indian Olympic Association and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

FIVB representatives included Steve Tutton, Stephen Bock and Hitesh Malhotra. Kunwar Sultan Singh represented the Indian Olympic Association, while Assistant Secretary Banga Raju represented the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

The elections were conducted by the Volleyball Federation of India Ad Hoc Committee composed of Mr. Rohit Rajpal as Chair and ad hoc Alaknanda Ashok, S. Gopinath Nair and Stephen Bock as members. The Ad Hoc Committee was responsible for managing the Volleyball Federation of India and to ensuring that elections were conducted.

Joining Kanwar on the newly elected Executive Committee are Ramanand Choudhary as Secretary General; N.V. Hanumanth Reddy and Sushanta Biswa Sarma as Vice Presidents; Hari Singh Chauhan as Treasurer; Anand Shanker Rajhans and Kuldeep Vats as Joint Secretaries; and Binoy Joseph, Mithlesh Kumar Singh, Partha Das, S. Ramadasse and Uttam Raj as Executive Members. Four athlete representatives will complete the Committee once elected.

The newly formed group will serve as an interim body and will be assisted in the transition by a Steering Committee. FIVB and IOA have also established a steering committee for VFI, which will collaborate with the newly elected Interim leadership of VFI for a certain period and assist in a seamless transition. The Steering Committee will comprise the following members:

1. Mr. Rohit Rajpal, IOA Executive Council member
2. Mr. Stephen Bock, FIVB Head of Legal and General Counsel
3. Mr. Hitesh Malhotra, FIVB Head of Volleyball Empowerment and NF Relations

As part of its responsibilities, the new VFI leadership is required to submit a proposal to amend the constitution of the VFI, along with those of the State and District Associations, to ensure alignment with the National Sports Development Code of India, 2011. A report outlining the proposed timeline for completing this process must also be filed with the Court.

In addition, an Interim Athletes’ Commission must be established within four weeks of the election, in accordance with the requirements of Indian law. The Commission will oversee the election process for athlete representatives, who will make up 25 per cent of the Executive Committee.
