VNL 2025 is set to return this June, bigger and better than ever
The Volleyball Nations League (VNL) Council met online this week to reflect on the record-breaking VNL 2024 and prepare for this year’s revamped and expanded tournament, with the women’s edition getting underway on 4 June and the men’s following shortly after on 11 June.
The VNL Council, composed of the National Federations participating in or hosting the annual tournament, looked back at some of the defining moments of the VNL 2024 which saw record-breaking global viewership and set new benchmarks in attendance and global engagement. The members were also presented with updates on the upcoming edition, the first to feature an expansion from 16 to 18 teams per gender.
All FIVB Commission meetings, including this gathering, have been conducted online this month. This format aligns with the FIVB’s commitment to reducing environmental impact while providing greater flexibility for participants. The environmental benefits of this are substantial: the total carbon footprint of online versus onsite FIVB Commission meetings is 69 tonnes of CO2e lower, this largely due to the lack of air travel. This is equivalent to the emissions produced by running three to four cars continuously for an entire year or the annual carbon absorption of 3,100 trees*.
In his opening address, FIVB President Fabio Azevedo emphasised the VNL Council’s pivotal role in fulfilling the FIVB Strategic Vision 2032. He highlighted a number of key pillars shaping the sport’s future that the Council should focus on, including: Consolidation of Volleyball World Championships and the VNL; FIVB World Calendar 2029-2032; Technology and Integrity of the Game; and Social Responsibility and Mass Participation – Volleyball Foundation.
Discussions also focused on a number of key topics and innovations for international volleyball’s flagship annual event, alongside reports from Volleyball World on VNL 2024 and VNL 2025 and proposals from other commissions.
“The VNL is set to return bigger and better than ever in 2025, creating more opportunities for athletes, fans, host cities and the Global Volleyball Movement,” said President Azevedo. “Guided by our Strategic Vision 2032 motto, ‘Together as One,’ we aim to elevate the VNL to new heights. This Council plays a crucial role in ensuring we achieve this together, empowering our athletes, fans and stakeholders to keep inspiring the world through volleyball.”
The FIVB Commission meetings are set to conclude on 28 February with the Volleyball Council, following a month of productive meetings.
