Volleyball Australia has announced the Australian team for the 21st Asian Men’s U20 Volleyball Championship in Riffa, Bahrain from 22-29 August.
The event marks the first international junior men’s tournament since the COVID-19 pandemic that Australia will participate in.
The 12-strong team includes nine debutants and will be captained by Queensland’s Billy Greber.
The Asian Men’s U20 Volleyball Championship also doubles as the World Championship qualifier, with the top two teams qualifying for the 2023 FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship.
Head Coach Brendan Garlick said it was a great opportunity to give some of Australia’s best junior talent the chance to play on the international stage.
“For our junior men’s indoor team, this is the first international competition in over three years and for nine of the 12 athletes it is their first ever international tour,” he said.
“Our goal is clear, qualify for the junior world championship, but most importantly it is a crucial experience for us as a national program to build on as we continue to look forward to the 2028 and 2032 Olympics.”
The last time Australia featured at the tournament, also held in Bahrain, the team finished seventh after being beaten in the quarter-finals by South Korea.
