WOMEN’S U21 TEAMS BRACE FOR BATTLE IN SURABAYA

Indonesia’s second-largest city welcomes 24 teams for the World Championship

Following the FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U19 World Championship in Uzbekistan, the spotlight now turns to Southeast Asia where the world’s top women’s teams are set for battle for the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s U21 World Championship in Surabaya, Indonesia from August 7-17.

This year’s tournament features 24 teams, divided into four pools of six. Pool A brings together hosts  Indonesia, Argentina, Serbia, Puerto Rico, Canada and Vietnam. Pool B includes defending champions China lead a group that features USA, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Korea and Croatia. In Pool C, 2023 runners-up Italy join Türkiye, Egypt, Poland, Algeria and Czechia. Pool D features Brazil, Japan, Tunisia, Thailand, Chile and Bulgaria.

Each pool will play a round-robin format. The top four teams from each group will advance to the Round of 16.

Winners from that stage move on to the quarterfinals, while the losing teams continue in the 9th–16th place playoffs. The bottom two teams from each pool will compete in classification matches to determine positions 17 to 24.

All teams will play through three final rounds to determine the complete ranking from first to 24th place, culminating with the bronze and gold medal matches on August 17.

The action begins at 10:00 local time (03:00 UTC) on Thursday with 12 matches taking place in Surabaya. Indonesia will make its tournament debut against Vietnam in Pool A, closing out the opening day in front of a home crowd at 19:00.

Indonesia hosts the Women’s U21 World Championship for the first time, bringing top-level international volleyball to Surabaya and a rare chance for the home team to test itself against the world’s best.

With proven contenders, rising programs and talent across every pool, the competition is set to deliver from the first serve.
