1,000TH FIVB BEACH VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT NEXT IN SATUN

Lausanne, Switzerland, April 7, 2019 – As the 2018-2019 FIVB World Tour enters its eighth month of competition, a milestone looms for the international Volleyball federation as the 1,000th tournament will be played this week in Thailand.

Starting Monday, the second annual SMM Pak Bara Beach Open in Satun will mark the 1,000th and 1,001st tournaments since the start of international competition in February 1987 in Rio de Janeiro for men and August 1992 for women in Almeria, Spain.

With 999 tournaments completed to date, the list of FIVB-sanctioned events includes Olympic, World Championship, World Tour, Challenger/Satellite, Continental Cups and youth Olympics and world championships stops.  The first tournament was February 17-22 in Rio where 20 men’s teams from seven countries competed for US$22,000 in prize money.

The 2018-2019 FIVB World Tour campaign features 92 tournaments, including 45 for men and 47 for women with $7.40-million in prize money highlighted by the $1-million FIVB World Championships June 28-July 7 in Hamburg, Germany.
