VIETNAM POST STRAIGHT-SET WIN ON CHINESE TAIPEI AHEAD OF AVC CHALLENGE CUP SEMIS

Gresik, East Java, Indonesia, June 23, 2023 – Vietnam climbed to the top of the 2023 AVC Challenge Cup for Women Pool F after defeating Chinese Taipei 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-19) on Friday afternoon at the Tri Dharma Petrokimia Gresik Gymnasium.

The victory signalled Vietnam’s unbeaten run after Day 5 of the competition in Gresik City. Captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy fielded in 22 points, playing all throughout the match.

From the onset, Vietnam looked solid, wielding nearly unstoppable attacks from the captain, and from opposite Hoang Thi Kieu Trinh. Their firepower from the flanks boasted of consistency, showing how they ran all aspects of the game in system.

The highlight of Vietnam’s was their solid defense, posting excellent coverage across all areas.

“We know that Chinese Taipei is a good team. They are known for their speed and we tried to prepare for this, especially with the block,” said Tran Thi Thanh Thuy.

Vietnam’s frontline stood so formidably, scoring a total of 13 blocks in the match. Their backcourt did an equally fantastic job in serve-reception and passing, which ultimately boosted their attack efficiency, and mostly their momentum. They completed the match with merely 8 as their error count.

Meanwhile, Chinese Taipei looked rather tentative in their offense. They seemed to have played rather nervously, which showed in their errors. Mostly, they were unable to find solutions against the opponents’ blocking, even with several attempts to switch and shuffle the roster.

Chinese Taipei head coach Chen Yu-An commended their opponents well-deserved victory.

“Vietnam played really well today, and what hurt us the most was their defense. They blocked really well and also received well,” he said.

Even with Friday’s defeat, Chinese Taipei will continue to contend the title as the second-ranked team in Pool F.

“We have to reset and prepare again for the next match. We want to perform better in each aspect of the game, and with every player on the court,” added Chen Yu-An.

The Chinese Taipei side will await the top team in Pool E, as their opponents for the 16:30 semi-final match schedule on Saturday.

Vietnam will play against the second-ranked team in Pool E in the main event during the later match set at 19:00.  All times local.
