Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, September 1, 2023 – Hosts Thailand, consecutive two-time Asian silver medallists, methodically tore the Mongolian defence into pieces to ease past the unfancied rivals in a totally lopsided battle in their last preliminary Pool A encounter of the 22nd Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship at Chartchai Hall here on Friday.
The exceptional 25-12, 25-7, 25-11 win put Thailand on top of Pool A with six points from two straight wins to secure their place in Top 8, joined by Pool A second place Australia. As a result of the match, winless Mongolia are relegated to Classification Round for 9th-14th places.
Thailand fielded a formidable lineup in the opening set against Mongolia, which had already suffered their first loss at the hands of Australia the previous day. Powerful hitters Ajcharaporn Kongyot, Pimpichaya Kokram and Wipawee Srithong entertained a large crowd of home fans at the competition venue with their thundering attacks to race to a 13-9 lead. After that, Thailand showed no mercy to the determined visitors to score 8 points in a row, thanks to Pimpichaya’s swift cross-court spikes and Jarasporn Bundasak’s successful blocks. Mongolia responded with some good shots from opposite hitter Ganbold Enkhnaran, but the Mongolian fightback did not last long. The host side stormed on to win the set 25-12.
Thailand shuffled their lineup in the second set, with another six players led by Chatchu-On Moksri, Sasipapron Janthawisut and Thanacha Sooksod being sent in the court. Thailand dismantled the opponents’ defence with their combination attacks and great serves. The host side led 15-1, 8 points of which came from Chatchu-On’s spectacular ace serves. Since then, Thailand mixed the offensive mobility of powerful attacks from Sasipaporn and Thanacha to reach the set point at 24-7 before Chatchu-On landed a powerful midcourt spike to end the rivals’ challenge in this set. Thailand won 25-7.
In the third set, Thailand quickly established a 17-6 lead and maintained control after that, shattering the Mongolia’s hopes of comeback to close out the set at 25-11 for the match.
Chatchu-On Moksri delivered 11 points including 2 attacks and 9 aces for Thailand, while Pimpichaya Kokram and Wipawee Srithong added another 10 and 9 points respectively. Ganbold Enkhanaran scored 6 points on the Mongolia’s loss.
