Manama, Bahrain, August 1, 2024 – Australia and the Philippines made winning starts in Pool G on Thursday in the consolation round for 9th-16th places of the 15th Asian Men’s U18 Volleyball Championship at Isa Sport City Hall C.
Australia shrugged off an opening-set setback to defeat Lebanon 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-21), while the Philippines defeated Hong Kong, China 3-1 (18-25, 25-20, 28-26, 26-24).
Both teams have secured their places in the 9th-16th bracket for their final classification in the tournament, even with one game still to play on Friday in this stage.
Sionetupou Veamatahau had a game-high 15 points to lead the Australians in their contest. Harvey Schutte added nine in their victory, while Serge Chehab scored 13 for the Lebanese, who stayed winless after four games but were able to register their first set victory of the tournament.
For the Filipinos, their match was a hotly contested affair. They were able to dig deep and eke out the hard-earned victory.
Luke Anton Carl Macatangay continued his strong play in the championship by finishing as the Philippines’ top scorer with 20 points. Roderick Medino and Lance Danielle Babon added 15 apiece. Ching Kin Ko had 25 for Hong Kong, China, while Ka Lok Yim scored 17.
Both Australia and the Philippines improved to six points apiece on the Pool G table.
