The volleyball competition at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 has come to a triumphant close, leaving its mark on the hearts of millions around the world – whether that be the athletes, coaches, devoted fans, global leaders or the star-studded line-up of celebrities and dignitaries who witnessed the magnificent scenes.
Set against the backdrop of the iconic South Paris Arena 1, the competition, which was held exactly 60 years after volleyball’s debut at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 1964, was nothing short of spectacular. Each day, the arena was buzzing with excitement with the sporting spectacle that was unfolding, drawing in crowds from all corners of the world.
Reflecting on the success of the volleyball competitions in the French capital, FIVB President Dr Ary S. Graça F° said: “Paris 2024 has been a shining example of the importance of sport and how volleyball can unite people from all areas of the world. From the athletes’ extraordinary performances to the incredibly hard work of everybody behind the scenes to put on this event and the unwavering support and enthusiasm of fans, this volleyball competition has showcased the very best of our sport and the Olympic spirit.
“In what was my final Olympic Games as President of the FIVB, I am incredibly proud that the Federation has been a part of creating these special memories for millions of people and we look forward to continuing to bring joy through volleyball.”

Paris 2024 volleyball champions crowned
In the men’s tournament, France defended their Olympic title against Poland in front of an ecstatic home crowd, securing their second consecutive gold in what was an epic final. The victory was a defining moment for the host nation, as “Allez les Bleus” echoed through the stadium, capturing the pride of a nation revelling in Olympic glory. The USA secured the final spot on the podium after emerging victorious over Italy. For the second time at an Olympic Games, star outside hitter Earvin Ngapeth, who was playing in his third Games, was named as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the event.

In the women’s competition, Italy made history by clinching their first-ever Olympic gold in volleyball. Led by the unstoppable Paola Egonu, who was crowned MVP, the Italian team delivered a performance that will be remembered for years to come as they claimed victory over the USA. Brazil claimed the bronze medal as they secured the win over another volleyball powerhouse Türkiye.

Famous faces grace the South Paris Expo
Both the men’s and women’s competitions were watched by some of the most famous faces in sports, entertainment and politics. Tennis legends Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams, Iga Świątek and Billie Jean King came to enjoy the volleyball action, along with global footballing icons Zinedine Zidane, Tom Brady and Jason Kelce, Royal families from all over the world, political figureheads and Olympic Movement family and friends.

Volleyball Experiences inspire hundreds of thousands
Beyond the thrilling matches, the event served as a powerful reminder of the Olympic spirit. An astounding 300,000 fans visited and participated in the innovative Volleyball Experiences, hosted by the FIVB and FIVB Volleyball Foundation. The Volleyball Experiences offered fans an immersive opportunity to engage with volleyball and beach volleyball like they never have before, as they got to try out interactive games ranging from a full-size professional volleyball court mock-up to a serve simulator. The excitement and camaraderie around these experiences reflected the true essence of the sport.
