The event brought together leaders from the world of volleyball and sport to reflect, celebrate and discuss the future of volleyball
The first ever Global Volleyball Summit took place in Porto, Portugal on Monday following the 39th FIVB World Congress. The event featured a renowned lineup of speakers addressing a diverse range of topics including communications, good governance, FIVB Volleyball Empowerment, community development, sustainability and event strategy.
A number of updates were also provided on Volleyball World, with CEO Finn Taylor and other senior leaders discussing sponsorship, VBTV and digital transformation.

IOC Sports Director Kit McConnell also presented at the Summit. Reflecting on volleyball’s success during the Olympic Games Paris 2024, he stated “What you did…sets a precedent for sports.”

Speaking to the sport’s remarkable growth, Michael R. Payne, former IOC Director of Marketing and Broadcast Rights, said: “No sport has created an atmosphere, a connection, an act of participation with a spectator base like volleyball has.” Reflecting on Paris 2024, he added: “Nothing came close to the atmosphere you created in your two venues.”
Newly elected FIVB President Fabio Azevedo closed the Congress with heartfelt gratitude, stating: “We must be very proud of what we achieved here today. For the first time ever, we had a Summit…with the entire family. And what a remarkable three days. I am very grateful and very happy.”
