The event brought together 16 teams from across the region
Beach volleyball courts in Doha, Qatar witnessed a landmark event last week as the inaugural WAVA U20 Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship took place, the first-ever junior female beach volleyball event in the Middle East.
Organised by the FIVB and supported by Olympic Solidarity through the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Youth Athlete Development Programme, the historic competition marked a significant milestone for women’s sport in the region.
The competition, held from 2-3 December, featured participants from Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Yemen. It showcased the region’s growing enthusiasm for beach volleyball and the talent of young female athletes from across the region.
Lebanon’s Lara Al Nahi and Louna Khorbotly claiming the gold medal after a gripping final against Jordan’s Batoul Husein Ahmad Abdallah and Ghyad Alashoush, who earned silver. Lebanon celebrated further success with Angelina Farah and Angy Lakkis securing the bronze medal.
The WAVA competition builds on the ongoing success of similar youth-focused initiatives worldwide, such as the pilot project in the Eastern Caribbean Zone. There, the FIVB, the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) and Olympic Solidarity joined forces to develop youth teams through the ECVA U19 Beach Volleyball Championships held in St Kitts and Nevis earlier this year. These initiatives have proven to be instrumental in elevating youth beach volleyball globally, providing platforms for athletes to compete at continental and international levels.
By hosting this inaugural event in Doha, the FIVB and Olympic Solidarity are paving the way for a brighter future for women’s beach volleyball in the Middle East.
