The 21st edition of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championships will take place in 2025. It will be hosted by the Philippines in their capital Manila from 12 to 28 September. It will be the first edition after the recently adopted changes in the format and in the periodicity of the World Championships.

For the first time since the inaugural World Championship in 1949, the event will be held in an odd year. All editions from the second in 1952 to the 20th in 2022 were played once every four years. Now it will be three years from the previous edition, after which the World Championships will be organized once every two years. For the first time, 32 teams will participate in the tournament (previously 24 teams competed).

Also for the first time, the event will be hosted by the Philippines, the second Asian country to welcome the men’s World Championship, after Japan organized it in 1998 and 2006.

The Philippines, as tournament hosts, and Italy (pictured in the main photo), as defending champions, were automatically qualified. Another 15 spots, three per continental confederation, were awarded at the 2023 continental championships. Egypt, Algeria and Libya qualified from Africa, Japan, Iran and Qatar – from Asia, Poland, Slovenia and France – from Europe, USA, Canada and Cuba – from the NORCECA region, and Argentina, Brazil and Colombia – from South America.

The remaining 15 spots were allocated to the highest placed national teams in the FIVB World Ranking as of 30 August, 2024, not yet qualified: Germany, Serbia, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Belgium, Türkiye, Czechia, Bulgaria, Portugal, Finland, Tunisia, China, Romania, Chile and Korea.

The 32 qualified teams were drawn into eight single round-robin pools of four:

  • Pool A: Philippines, Iran, Egypt, Tunisia
  • Pool B: Poland, Netherlands, Qatar, Romania
  • Pool C: France, Argentina, Finland, Korea
  • Pool D: USA, Cuba, Portugal, Colombia
  • Pool E: Slovenia, Germany, Bulgaria, Chile
  • Pool F: Italy, Ukraine, Belgium, Algeria
  • Pool G: Japan, Canada, Türkiye, Libya
  • Pool H: Brazil, Serbia, Czechia, China

The top two teams in the final standings of each pool will advance to the eighthfinals. The knockout stage of the competition will then continue with quarterfinals, semifinals and medal matches, which means that a total of 64 games will be played at the two venues in Manila – the Smart Araneta Coliseum and the SM Mall of Asia Arena – during the 2025 World Championship.
