Astemo Rivale Ibaraki and Saitama Ageo Medics followed their patterns of winning a game and losing a game in each of their previous several double headers in the women’s Daido Life SV.League in Japan and did it again as they met one another in one of the 13th-leg match-ups this weekend, exchanging shutouts. Sunday’s upset cost Ageo a substantial drop to fifth place in the current standings.

In the first game between the two rivals on Saturday, Saitama Ageo Medics dominated on the way to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-22) victory over hosts Astemo Rivale Ibaraki, with a 17-point match high from Serbian outside hitter Sara Lozo and despite an impressive five kill blocks from the home team’s American middle blocker Brionne Butler.

“We prepared to overcome Astemo’s tenacious defence. Thanks to the efforts of everyone, including the high-quality swings of the spikers, the passes of the setters that supported them, and the defenders, who always followed up on the blocks, we were able to win many rallies. They showed great concentration and unity,” commented Ageo’s head coach Shigekazu Okubo.

The tables were turned on Sunday, however, and Astemo put together a 3-0 (25-21, 28-26, 25-22) shutout of their visitors, causing them a fall of two spots in the table, down to fifth place on a 16-8 win-loss ratio and 49 points. Astemo stayed seventh on 14-10 and 40. Outside Kurumi Takama was their leading scorer in the match, with 17 points towards the victory.

“Our athletes played more aggressively than yesterday,” said Astemo’s head coach Kodai Nakaya. “They were thirsty for points, which was great. Over the past two days, we have learned a lot from Saitama Ageo’s team strength and skills. We will gain confidence from what we have done and we will grow by uniting more, learning and fleshing out our skills.”
