Pasig City, Philippines, April 20, 2025 – The Philippines’ PLDT High Speed Hitters dialed in a straight-sets win, 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-12) against Australia’s Queensland Pirates during opening day of the 1st AVC Women’s Volleyball Champions League.
Sunday evening’s Pool D match at the PhilSports Arena saw three PLDT High Speed Hitters connecting with double-digit contributions: Savannah Davison (14 points), Mika Reyes (11 points), Wilma Salas (10 points).
Davison, who led all scorers in the field, was pleased with the team’s performance, as she assessed her role in Sunday’s victory. “I think I need to be more than just an attacker in this game. I think I need to be filling in the role of leading the team because it is an international tournament. It can come by as a surprise, the way that it looks or the way that it feels . I just want to make sure that the team is where we’re at and I think I was able to do that today,” she said.
Queensland Pirates started off strong with Alisha Stevens and Scarlett Rudder working the flank and the middle. They also gained leverage with their performance from the service line, unloading aces or causing the clogged passing lanes of the opponents.
PLDT High Speed Hitters suffered from a sluggish start, trying to find their rightful rhythm. They slowly picked up their points by running the attack on Wilma Salas or Savannah Davison. They also activated Mika Reyes at the middle. Later on, they gained even more momentum from their opponents’ errors, which helped seal victory in the first set.
By the second set, the Philippine club ran a more diverse offense, switching between their powerful wing hitters and an equally formidable middle attack. This showed their advantage and composure in completing transition plays, while finding their opponents with a string of unforced errors. They carried the momentum over into the third set. Setter Angelica Alcantara continued to enable her main hitters and held good control of the middle, as the Philippine club made their way to a straight-sets win on opening day.
PLDT High Speed Hitters head to a rest day and resume play on Tuesday, 16:00 against Thailand’s Nakhon Ratchasima QminC VC. Queensland Pirates will meet the Thai club earlier, in Monday’s 13:00 match. All times local.
