Pasig City, Philippines, April 22, 2025 – The Philippines’ Petro Gazz Angels punched their ticket to the quarterfinals of the 1st AVC Women’s Volleyball Champions League after a 3-0 defeat (25-8, 25-12, 25-12) of Hip Hing Women’s Volleyball Team of Hong Kong, China in Pool B of the competition.
Giovanna Day led all scorers on the board, posting 18 points in Tuesday evening’s final match at the PhilSports Arena. “This was a great game to find our rhythm as a team, to have fun, and to enjoy each other’s play. We just relaxed and enjoyed every point and I think that was the difference between today and yesterday’s match. We could have given ourselves so much pressure but we decided to really just have fun and enjoy today,” she said.
Petro Gazz Angels fielded in their best unit on the floor. Brooke Van Sickle and Day worked the flanks while Mar Jana Phillips posted at the middle. The home team eased into their tempo, breezing through with 25-8 in the first set.
The Philippine club switched to several substitutes in the second set. Opposite hitter Aiza Pontillas and setter Djanel Cheng brought in variation in their dynamics while performing equally well. It may have been Coach Koji Tzururabara’s way of finding the best combination of players in preparation for the remainder of the competition.
Hip Hing’s Kwan Sze Man made a couple of good swings, but the team could not produce much bandwidth to outplay their opponents. They showed difficulty in passing and suffered from simple miscues.
The home team utilized their substitution quota in the third set, getting as many players to be involved and to contribute in the competition. They took the opportunity to run a variety of plays, as momentum continued to swing toward a straight-sets win.
Petro Gazz Angels now await the confirmation of their match-up in the quarterfinals starting Thursday.
Meanwhile, Hip Hing has remained winless after pool play and will no longer proceed to the next phase.
