Boracay, Philippines, May 24, 2019 – Japanese top seeds Jumpei Ikeda and Katsuhiro Shiratori won both their matches in the pool play round to advance straight into the quarterfinals of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Boracay Open.
Ikeda and Shiratori dictated the tempo against the host nation’s Mike Abria and Jade Becaldo to win 2-0 (21-15, 21-14) in their opening match on Friday, then followed it up with a 2-1 (18-21, 21-18, 16-14) win to take pole position in Pool A.
Ikeda first teamed-up with Olympian Shiratori at the 3-star event in Sydney and they are now playing in their fifth World Tour event. Their best finish so far is in fifth place at the Goteborg 1-star event in Sweden last April.
Austria’s Maximilian Trummer and Simon Baldauf, Thailand’s Kitti Duangjinda and Dunwinit Kaewsai and Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Chen-Wei and Wu Shin-Shian also picked-up two wins in pool play to move to the quarterfinals.
Trummer and Baldauf prevailed in tiebreakers against Thailand’s Narongdet Kangkon and Banlue Nakprakhong 2-1 (21-13, 19-21, 15-13) and Singapore’s Kingsley Tay and Mark Shen Fan Yang 2-1 (21-11, 21-23, 15-9) to win Pool B.
Thai duo Kitti and Dunwinit and Chinese Taipei pair Hsu and Wu swept all their matches to dominate in Pool C and D, respectively.
