KAZAKHSTAN OVERCOME INDONESIA TO CLAIM SECOND WIN

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, January 8, 2020 – Kazakhstan overcome Indonesia in a tough 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-18) to register their second consecutive victory on the second match day of 2020 AVC Women’s Tokyo Volleyball Qualification here at the Chatchai Hall.

Hangestri Pertiwi Megawati scored a match-high 21 points but failed to bring a win to Indonesia while the attacking trio of Anarkulova Sana, Anikonova Kristina and Drobyshevskaya Olga jointly contributed 40 points for Kazakhstan.

Facing taller Kazakhs, Indonesia played their quickness and diversity from the beginning. Hangestri Pertiwi Megawati and Nuari Purnama Arsela performed their fast attacks alternatively, helping Indonesia soon come to a 8-4 lead at the first technical timeout. Kazakhstan had to call a timeout at 4-10 behind and their advantage in height was brought into play afterwards. With several successful blocks, they gradually caught up and balanced the situation in 15-15. Both sides traded points till 21-21 before Kazakhstan pulled off to a 25-22 hard win thanks to an ace and a killing spike.

Both sides came into sticking to each other in the second set. After the first technical timeout in 7-8 behind, Indonesia sped up again in their combination and attacking, seeing Kazakhs off to a 14-9 lead. Kazakhstan immediately called a timeout and it really worked out as the rhythm of Indonesia was interrupted. Following a service error, the Indonesians found it more difficult to score any more in front of the blocking-wall. Seizing the opportunity, Kazakhstan evened the situation again to 17-17 tie and took back the initiative. Following a fast moving-attack by captain Safronova Alessya, Kazakhstan secured the tough set in 25-23.

Learning lessons from the previous two sets, Kazakhstan managed to control the tempo from the beginning of the third set. Armed with formidable blocks and destructive services, they led all the way to a 25-18 set win.

With two wins in a row with 6 points, Kazakhstan are hopeful to make it into the semi-finals. They are due to next take on Korea on Thursday, while winless Indonesia will play Iran in their last preliminary match.
