The Australian High Commission’s First Secretary, Frederic Jeanjean, has handed over funding assistance to the Vanuatu Volleyball Federation (VVF) for the construction of two beach volleyball courts in Luganville recently.
The Australian co-funded beach volleyball project, dubbed by VVF officials as “The Field of Dreams”, will see the construction of a fenced compound which will feature two beach volleyball courts providing a safe and secure environment for students, families and youths of Santo to play volleyball and keep fit.
VVF President, Debbie Masauvakalo said: “This project, when completed, will change the community’s everyday life and help VVF’s Volley4Change (V4C) program.
“Our community-based program delivers volleyball related activities to empower women, girls and people living with disabilities through participation in quality sport and physical activity, thereby improving health, nutrition and social inclusion.
Mr Jeanjean said this project under the High Commission’s Direct Aid Program (DAP) builds on Australia’s longstanding support to sports in Vanuatu, including through Team Up and the PacificAus Sports program.
“Team Up activities range from initiatives to address gender-based violence, modified activities for people with and without disabilities to participate together, and programs that encourage women leaders both on and off the field. The volleyball courts will contribute to these initiatives, promote healthy lifestyles and encourage inclusive participation.”
Volley4Change is one of six sports for development programs in Vanuatu under Australia’s Team Up program.
Team Up supports partnerships across the Pacific use sport to bring people together, champion inclusion and create opportunity with a focus on gender, disability, leadership, governance and knowledge.
In March this year, the Australian High Commission launched the Team Up Program in Vanuatu supporting six programs across AFL, Hockey, Football, Volleyball, Swimming and Cricket.
DAP is designed to support community-based organisations in Vanuatu. Through DAP, the Australian Government aims to improve living standards of the people of Vanuatu and help promote economic and social development.
