Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, July 7, 2022 – China, Japan, Thailand triumphed on Day 4 of the competition during the Preliminary Round of the 21st Asian Women’s U20 Volleyball Championship held at Nur-Sultan City’s NU Sports Centre.
China dropped their first set in the competition, but completed a 3-1 (25-14, 22-25, 25-12, 25-20) defeat of Chinese Taipei on Thursday afternoon in the Kazakh capital city.
Outside hitter Zhuang Yushan proved her consistently play throughout the match as one of China’s chief scorers. She tallied 21 points from 16 attacks, 4 service winners and a block. Zhuang Xinru added another 14 points for China’s fourth win in the competition.
The twelve-time titlists will now head to the semi-finals as Pool B leaders after sweeping their matches in the Preliminary Round.
Defending champions Japan played with power service in their 3-0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-19) defeat of Uzbekistan in the day’s first match in Pool B.
The Japanese side connected with a massive 13 service winners, which ultimately defined their quality and level of play during the match. They also dominated in attack, scoring off a total of 47 hits, with Megumi Fukazawa (12 points) and Mika Yoshitake (11 points) leading the team tally.
Thailand took a straight-sets win, 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-18), against hosts Kazakhstan, to register their second victory in Pool A.
The Thais found tough challenge against the hosts’ tall line-up, which played well in the middle. However, Thailand posted good coverage and maintained a good level of composure in clutch plays. They went on utilize their wide range of options in offence, finding merit and control in the wings and by the middle.
Suchanan Nanudorn led all scorers with 12 points (10 attacks, 2 blocks) but also found much-needed scoring support from nearly every Thai player on the floor.
Teams head to a much needed rest and recovery day on Friday, July 8. The Preliminary round will come to a conclusion on Saturday, July 9, to define the semi-finals match-ups on Sunday, July 10.
The championship match on Monday, July 11, will hail the top two teams to directly qualify for the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U21 World Championship in 2023.
