Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, July 7, 2022 – Thailand took a straight-sets win 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-18) against hosts Kazakhstan in Pool A of the Preliminary Round of the 21st Asian Women’s U20 Volleyball Championship on Thursday evening.
Suchanan Nanudorn (12 points), Ampha Sonsurat (11 points), Nantikan Tunyapoo (10 points) all delivered double digits for Thailand’s second victory in the competition at the NU Sports Centre.
“It was impressive how everyone worked together, to help one another. When we had difficulty in the match, we inspired one another to go back to the top of our game,” said Ampha.
The Thais managed well on the floor, which gave them breathing room to compose their plays well.
Setter Sasiprapa Maneewong effected a well-run offence, engaging Ampha at the flank, and Suchanan for the middle attacks.
The hosts improved their play in the second set, showing that they could play along in transition. They utilized the middles Valeriya Golvanova and Yuliya Akimova, as they delivered in quick plays. However, when rallies became longer and more frequent, the Kazakh players, they could not seem to execute as many options in attack. They also lagged in delivering high-percentage plays, given their opponents good coverage.
Thailand went to play in their usual style and quality, giving equal importance to defence as much as offence. While their opponents had the slight edge in blocks, the Thais managed well upon the second line of defence.
The Kazakh side posted a better performance in the third set, staying ahead by several points. They later suffered from their miscues to lose grip of the match.
Thailand complete their Preliminary Round matches with a 2-1 card while Kazakhstan will continue to search for their first victory in the competition. Both teams will now await their respective match-ups for the semi-final round on Sunday, July 10.
