Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, July 9, 2022 – China, Japan, Korea, Thailand proceed to contend the title as the Final Four teams at 21st Asian Women’s U20 Volleyball Championship.
The Preliminary Round concluded on Saturday evening at Nur-Sultan City’s NU Sports Centre, with Chinese Taipei, Japan, and Korea winning the last of their matches in pool play.
Chinese Taipei defeated Uzbekistan in straight sets 3-0 (25-8, 25-7, 25-14),to complete their matches in Pool B with a 2-2 win-loss card.
Opposite Hung Shih-Han powered the victory with 24 points (16 attacks, 6 aces and 2 blocks), but the most intense weapons for the Chinese Taipei side were unleashed from the service line. They ended the hour-long match with a victory boosted by 12 service aces.
Later, titleholders Japan took their third victory in the competition as they defeated India in straight sets, 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-14).
Setters Niina Kumagai and Haruka Kaji ran the Japanese offence well, maintaining their trademark quick pace, while keeping close, careful guard of their error intake. They likewise boosted their performance with good service which proved to shake off the opponents’ serve-receive.
Japan finish the Preliminary Round as the second ranked team in Pool B to continue onto the semi-finals on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Korea completed a sweep of their Pool A – Preliminary Round matches, after a 3-0 defeat of Iran (25-20, 25-14, 25-21) in Saturday’s opening match.
Middle blocker Kim Sebeen performed with a match-high of 16 points, deliverubf 14 attacks, 1 stuff block, and 1 service ace. The Korean side managed their plays steadily, and maintained a good percentage of accuracy in their attacks.
Korea will now proceed as one of the top four teams to force a semi-final showdown with reigning champions Japan.
The semi-finals on Sunday, July 10, will set the stage for the Championship match on Monday, July 11. The champion and vice-champion teams will progress to FIVB Volleyball Women’s U21 World Championship to be held in 2023.
